UPY 820
Title:  UPY 820
Description:  In the days of Southern Pacific de-turbocharged SD35s roamed Englewood yard, today under the UP flag it's mostly de-turbocharged SD40-2s turned SD38-2s. Note the Mopac style 4 holed exhaust manifold.

UPY 821
Title:  UPY 821
Description:  Delivered new to Missouri Pacific as SD40-2 3245 in September 1978, the lack of dynamic brakes made it an oddball on the UP roster. Instead of retirement this diesel was deturbocharged and downgraded to SD38-2 specs and now used in hump service. This unit now sports four exhaust stacks instead of one but kept three radiator fans instead of two typical of the 38 series.

UPY 845
Title:  UPY 845
Description:  Delivered to Missouri Pacific as SD40-2 3310 in December 1979, lack of dynamic braking made this an excellent candidate for downgrading to hump service. After losing the turbocharger this unit emerged as UP 2845 then reassigned to UPY 845. The ghost of the number 2 still haunts the cabside.

Title:  UPY 851
Description:  Switch jobs in Davidson Yard have come to a standstill due to an SD38-2 splitting a switch. Until this EMD gets re-railed switching will be pretty difficult with a yard lead occupied with this derailment.

UPY 851
Title:  UPY 851
Description:  One of the Davidson Yard hump switchers takes a break at the ready tracks after being serviced in the diesel shop. This EMD was delivered to Missouri Pacific as SD40-2 3267 in May 1979 and after the Union Pacific merger became 4267 then was demoted to B unit status becoming B4267. Union Pacific retired most of the former Mopac SD40-2s without dynamic brakes but a few of them were de-turbocharged for yard service and reclassified SD38-2s like UPY 851. Note the new wheels on the lead truck.

UPY 854
Title:  UPY 854
Description:  Delivered to Missouri Pacific in 1974 as SD40-2 836, this unit was built without dynamic brakes. After the MP-UP merger the non-dynamic brake SD40-2s was slowly dismantled until some of the remaining members were rebuilt into non-turbocharged SD38-2s for yard service. UPY 854 was released for yard service in June 2000 and shows signs of twelve years of hard usage. Time for fresh paint.

UPY 855
Title:  UPY 855
Description:  I captured this same locomotive in nearly the exact same spot in March 2011 and nearly three years later 855 is still at work in Davidson Yard but now in fresh paint. Built for Missouri Pacific as an SD40-2 then rebuilt as a de-turbocharged SD38-2 and used in yard service.

UPY 855
Title:  UPY 855
Description:  UPY 855 was delivered to Missouri Pacific as an SD40-2 but the lack of dynamic brakes made this locomotive unsuitable for UP's mountainous terrain. Instead of being removed from the roster UP rebuilt this EMD into an SD38-2 along with several other former Mopac SD40-2s and assigned them to yard and hump duty. In this photo a former SD40-2 turned SD38-2 and an SD60 combine their 5,800 horsepower to move a long line of freight cars in Davidson Yard.
