DGNO 1566 |
Description: |
The soon to be DGNO 1566 undergoes painting at the open air diesel inspection pit in Mercer Yard into GWI orange and black. This GP15-1 was originally delivered to Chicago & Northwestern as CNW 4416 in June 1976 then worked for successor Union Pacific but was never renumbered due to a soon to be expiring lease. Although the lease officially expired on August 1, 1991 this unit wasn't officially retired until January 10, 1992 then moved to VMV in Paducah, Ky for owner GMAC Leasing until being sold to GATX. GATX would later place this unit on long term lease to California Northern as CFNR 105 but for the past several years has worked for Dallas, Garland, and Northeastern in full CFNR paint. After the GWI purchase of DGNO this unit was purchased from GATX and will now be known as DGNO 1566 wearing GWI orange and black. According to DGNO crews, the GP15-1 fleet are terrible pullers but at least this one will be nice looking. |

ATSF 5016 |
Description: |
This is the very first railroad picture I ever shot. These units are idling in Santa Fe East Yard off Exposition Avenue in Dallas below I-30. This whole yard was purchased by DART and is now a light rail yard and shop. The ATSF line running east out of the yard has been ripped up and turned into a trail and the remaining tracks split between KCS and DGNO. Only if I had been a smarter 17 year old, I would have taken more photos. |

BNSF 1800 |
Description: |
When delivered to Santa Fe as SD40-2 5030 in October 1977 this EMD was assigned to high priority freights well into the 1990s. Since the BNSF merger this locomotive was renumbered first to 6345 then to 1800 and trading yellow and blue for black and orange. Since renumbering and repainting this locomotive was demoted to 2,999 horsepower making it (and all other SD40-2s on the roster) unfit for road service and now carries an SD39-2 stencil below the front cab walkway. The two stencils on the front anticlimber are "9 INCH MAXIMUM END PLATE HEIGHT" and "YARD OR TRAIL SERVICE ONLY". |

BNSF 9154 |
Description: |
I always thought wide nosed locomotives were spacious and comfortable but this poor conductor is pressed up against the glass. Someone should look into that. |

UP 7187 |
Description: |
A loaded unit grain train with a very excited conductor moves south through Fort Worth with two AC44CWs in charge. This is the first time I've ever caught a railroad employee as excited as this guy, I suppose some people just really enjoy their job. I only wish I could be this excited on Monday morning. Or Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. Note the yellow reflective tape above the numberboards. These have been appearing on more UP power recently. |

UP 3105 |
Description: |
Looking like it just left the EMD paint booth at LaGrange, IL, this operating SD40-2 is headed for display at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, CA. This locomotive has been donated by Union Pacific in exchange for Big Boy 4014 which is to be returned to active service. Something about an SD40-2 in a museum makes me feel old. This photo will appear in the April 2014 issue of Trains magazine. |

BNSF 1286 |
Description: |
A quartet of Gensets roll a line of empties towards BNSF's North Yard. Directly behind the locomotives is a flat car turned shoving platform used for long back up moves. With no shade or shelter, it doesn't sound like an appealing place to be 80% of the year. |

UP 4158 |
Description: |
Nearly identical SD70Ms hudde together on a cold and snowy February day, a somewhat rare event in Dallas. Even more rare are two trains together sitting on the mainline which made the trip worthwhile. 4158 is leading a stack train to Los Angeles and 4308 is leading a manifest train to Fort Worth. Both are waiting for a BNSF rock train to clear the main ahead before continuing west through Dallas. Note the two different plows used on these two EMDs. |

BNSF 7192 |
Description: |
Fresh out of the General Electric Fort Worth plant is this ES44C4 out stretching her legs for a bit before being delivered to BNSF. Brand new locomotives just look fantastic, I rarely come up to this part of Fort Worth but today I was rewarded with the first of four ES44C4s emerging from the factory ready for delivery. |
